Director Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad on Tuesday said that Kashmir valley is unlikely to witness any major snowfall until December 15.
Speaking to news agency,Mukhtar Ahmad said the overall weather pattern for early December remains largely dry.
โThere is no major snowfall till December 15. Except for a few weak disturbances, we do not expect any significant snowfall activity,โ he said.
The MeT Director also shared insights on the ongoing La Niรฑa phase, which continues to influence global and regional weather patterns.
โLa Niรฑa is still in its active phase, but from January it will weaken. We expect it to go into a weaker phase as the winter progresses,โ he noted.
Despite the absence of major snowfall, the Valley is reeling under intense cold conditions as night temperatures have dropped well below the freezing point across many areas.
Srinagar recorded a low of โ2.5ยฐC, slipping further from โ1.9ยฐC the previous night.Shopian remained the coldest location in the Valley at โ5ยฐC.
Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, registered โ2.4ยฐC, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded โ 3.1ยฐC. Kokernag in south Kashmir reported a minimum of โ0.6ยฐC.
Tourist destinations such as Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded โ2.2ยฐC and 0ยฐC, respectively.
As the Valley moves deeper into winter, residents are preparing for harsher conditions in the coming weeks. MeT officials have advised the public to stay updated with regular forecasts.
โWe are monitoring all systems closely. Any significant change in the weather pattern will be communicated promptly,โ Dr. Mukhtar added.
