‘Green Gold’ Looted During Night Hours: Forester; Locals Question Poor Forest Vigilance After Timber Seizure in Baramulla

Baramulla, December 30:
In a major action against illegal timber smuggling, forest officials on Tuesday night seized 11-ft deodar logs from Khadiniyar Compartment No. 1D in Baramulla district. Officials described the seized timber as valuable “green gold” and said legal proceedings, including the registration of an FIR, will be initiated against those involved.
Forest department officials stated that smugglers allegedly cut down the deodar trees during night hours to evade detection. “Necessary legal action will be taken as per law,” officials assured.
However, local residents have raised serious concerns over repeated incidents of timber smuggling in the area. They questioned how such large-scale felling of green trees is possible without being noticed. Locals alleged that smugglers frequently transport timber during late-night and early-morning hours, often carrying logs on their shoulders through Old Town Baramulla.
Residents further claimed that areas like Hajibal and Khadiniyar remain vulnerable and require strict and continuous monitoring. Despite repeated incidents, locals said that no arrests have been made so far, which has increased public suspicion and resentment.
Locals have appealed to senior forest officials to strengthen vigilance, identify those involved, and ensure strict legal action against all accused to curb the growing menace of illegal timber smuggling in Baramulla.
