Jammu, Feb 18 :

Police on Tuesday arrested two persons along with around two crores of cash on National Highway in Lakhanpur area of Kathua, the state border town between Jammu-Kashmir and Punjab.

As per details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), on a tip off, police laid a surprise check post at Lakhanpur and intercepted a Hyundai Creta bearing registration number HR98J- 9889, heading towards Kashmir.

Police searched the vehicle and found a huge quantity of cash packed in polybags and placed in the footrest area of the passenger seat.

The cash was seized and counted in the presence of the magistrate, which amounts over Rs 2 crore in denominations of Rs 500 notes.

Two Kashmir based youth were also arrested and taken to Lakhanpur Police Station for further questioning.

“An investigation is underway to find out the reason behind carrying so much money. We are exploring all the angles including drugs, terror fund and tax evasion to find the sources of cash,” a police officer said.

The authorities have registered a case and are proceeding with their investigation into the incident—(KNO)
