At least 70 people have died after a cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat on Sunday evening, state minister Brijesh Merja said The incident took place on the Machhu river in Morbi district.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his condolences over the incident and announced compensation to the families of those who died in the tragedy.
I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy of Morbi. The state government will provide Rs 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured,” CM Bhupendra Patel tweeted.
Several people fell in the river after the bridge collapsed on Sunday. Rescue operations are presently underway. The administration, with the help of locals, are engaged in rescuing people who fell in the river after the bridge collapse.
As per initial reports, the cable bridge was restarted five days ago after renovation.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Pate has announced that he is cancelling all his engagements for today and will be leaving for Morbi.
“I am leaving for Morbi by canceling all my upcoming events today. Direct monitoring of the situation and necessary coordination with the system will be achieved by reaching the site in person,” the chief minister said in a tweet.
