Idarah Falahudarain launched a weeklong drug de-addiction campaign today on 08-05-2022. Addressing the launching ceremony of the campaign, the Secretary-General of IFD said, ‘Drug addiction has taken the shape of an epidemic and it needs immediate attention. The most important intervention is to educate people about the negative impact of addiction to drugs and the ways to save lives.

He said Falahudarain’s weeklong campaign will take experts to the colleges and schools and engage with the young generation on the subject. Furthermore, public talks, social engagement, and awareness literature shall be distributed among the people”.

The first lecture of the campaign was held online via Zoom Cloud App at 8 pm today. More than 100 people joined the Zoom meeting and others attended the program on social media live options. The speaker for the day was Dr. Yasir Hassan, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, GMC Srinagar, In-Charge De-Addiction Centre, GMC Srinagar. He spoke on the theme, ‘Current Scenario of Substance Abuse in Kashmir’. He informed the audience that drug addiction is a brain disease and it impacts the brain functions of an individual. The most vulnerable section of the drug menace is the youth who are caught by the easy availability of drugs in the market. He cited peer pressure, availability of drugs, carelessness of parents, glamorization of drugs by movies, domestic issues, mental health issues, role models, and conflict zone as reasons for the increase in drug abuse in Kashmir. He informed that over 6 lac drug addicts happen to be in Jammu and Kashmir and that it is draining our economy and human resource as well. He informed about the research that is going on in the field. The program ended with a Q&A session.
