The Handwara Police District has maintained a steadfast campaign against illegal mining activities from November 2023 to May 2024. This initiative aims to protect natural resources and uphold environmental integrity. A total of 170 vehicles involved in illegal mining were seized across the Handwara Police District. The details are as follows:
- Handwara: 118 vehicles, including 6 tractors, 15 tippers, and 5 JCBs, were confiscated. The fines collected amounted to 1,579,292 rupees.
- Qalamabad: 33 vehicles, mainly tippers and a JCB, were seized with fines totaling 394,296 rupees.
- Vilgam: 2 vehicles were apprehended, resulting in fines of 22,706 rupees.
- Kralgund: 17 vehicles, primarily tippers and JCBs, were seized, with fines amounting to 361,148
In addition to vehicle seizures, 12 FIRs were registered related to illegal mining activities, highlighting the seriousness of these offenses. The total fines collected from these enforcement actions reached 2,357,442 rupees, reflecting the district’s commitment to deterring illegal mining through stringent punitive measures.
