Srinagar, Dec 7 :

The GST Enforcement Team South Kashmir has imposed penalties worth Rs 2.62 crore against tax violations during 2023-24, marking a 26% increase compared to the previous financial year.

The penalties were realized from ‘erring’ traders transporting goods in contravention of the GST Act and Rules. Notably, the team witnessed significant growth of 46%, 18%, and 25% during the first, second, and third quarters, respectively, compared to the previous financial year. April, July, and October 2024 saw remarkable growth of 182%, 113%, and 28%, respectively.

According to an official, the enforcement drives were led by Deputy Commissioner State Taxes Enforcement South Kashmir Waseem Raja (JKAS) under the supervision of Commissioner State Taxes P K Bhat (JKAS). Raja praised his team’s efforts, stating, “The drive against tax violations will be intensified to achieve further deterrence.”

The round-the-clock enforcement activities were conducted by four teams across four South Kashmir districts: Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama. The teams targeted high-risk commodities, including metal scrap, cement, marble, plywood, and readymade garments. Over two lakh e-way bills were verified, showing a 45% increase compared to the previous financial year.

Commissioner State Taxes Department P K Bhat commended the Enforcement Team South Kashmir for achieving this milestone, underscoring the department’s commitment to combating tax evasion. [KNT]
