Srinagar, Jan 7 :

Police in Srinagar city apprehended a man accused of defrauding the wife of an incarcerated drug peddler by impersonating a government officer and promising to secure her husband’s release.

Srinagar police said that the accused, identified as Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj, was arrested following a complaint filed by a lady alleging that Chaloo extracted Rs 2 lakh from her under the pretense of using his supposed government influence to facilitate her husband’s release.

The husband of the lady had been arrested over a month ago by Police Station Rajbagh in connection with a narcotics case and he is currently lodged at sub jail Bhadarwah.

When the complainant realized she had been deceived and demanded her money back, Chaloo returned only a portion of the amount and refused to refund the rest.

“Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused. Investigations into the matter are underway to uncover further details,” police said. [KNT]
