Srinagar, Sep 22 :
Former Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Ghulam Jeelani Pandit, passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 92.
Born on 22 February 1933, Pandit rose through the ranks of the police service and went on to become the fourth Director General of J&K Police.
News of his demise on 21 September 2025 was met with widespread sorrow across the police fraternity and among those who knew him personally. Colleagues and contemporaries described him as a leader whose grace, humility, and uprightness set a standard for generations of officers to emulate.
The present Director General of Police, along with all ranks of Jammu and Kashmir Police, expressed profound grief over Pandit’s passing. In a statement, the police force conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for strength and solace during this difficult hour.
Senior police officers recalled Pandit as a man of principle who never compromised on honesty. “He was a thorough gentleman, respected across ranks for his simplicity and dedication. He embodied what it meant to serve with integrity,” one retired officer told news agency while paying tribute to the departed soul.
During his tenure as DGP, Pandit was credited with guiding the force through challenging times while upholding values of fairness and impartiality. His leadership style, rooted in humility, earned him admiration from both subordinates and the wider public.
As news of his death spread, condolences poured in from across Jammu and Kashmir. Many described him as not just a police officer, but as a role model whose conduct inspired trust in the uniform.
Locals who knew him outside his official capacity remembered him as a man of few words but strong character. “He carried his achievements lightly and always treated people with respect. That was his real strength,” said a family acquaintance.
With his passing, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has lost one of its earliest icons, a leader remembered as much for his personal qualities as for his professional accomplishments. His funeral is expected to witness the participation of police personnel, former colleagues, and community members who admired his service.
