The repeated refusal of the Honble Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to allow a member to speak in Kashmiri, one of the official languages of J&K and a special feature of kashmir culture , is a stark reminder of the ongoing neglect and marginalization of the Kashmiri language.
For the second time, the Honblr Speaker has cited non-availability of a translator as a pretext to deny a member the right to express themselves in their mother tongue. This decision is not only a setback to the linguistic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also a blow to the promotion and preservation of the Kashmiri language.
The Adbi Markaz Kamraz (AMK) expresses strong resentment on this decision and demands that the Honble Speaker reconsiders this matter and takes concrete steps to ensure that Translator services are provide in the Assembly and members are allowed to speak in Kashmiri without any hindrance.
We urge:
- The Honle Speaker to revisit this decision and ensure linguistic rights of MLAs
- The government to take concrete steps to promote and preserve Kashmiri language
- All stakeholders to join hands in promoting linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of J&K
The AMK stands in solidarity with the Kashmiri language activists and demands justice for the linguistic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Adber Markaz Kamraz (AMK) J&K.
