Srinagar, Nov 26 :

Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on Wednesday issued a clarification following public debate over an internal order, asserting that the institute does not extend any form of VIP treatment and that all patients are treated strictly on the basis of medical urgency.

In a statement issued through its Public Relations Office, SKIMS said the controversy has arisen due to “misinterpretation or sensationalised reporting” of the order.

“SKIMS reiterates that all patients are equally important to us. Any streamlining or triaging is based solely on the urgency of care required, not on recommendations of any kind,” the statement said.

The institute recently set up a Medical Social Welfare Cell with designated staff and nodal officers as part of broader initiatives to streamline patient management. The cell facilitates assistance for deserving and economically weak patients through schemes such as AB-PMJAY, RAN, Chief Minister’s Cancer Treatment Fund, and others.

Clarifying the intent of the order, SKIMS said it was issued only to ensure hassle-free access to government health schemes for poor and needy patients who often approach offices like the Raj Bhawan or the Chief Minister’s Office for relief.

“Where does the question of VIP treatment arise?” SKIMS asked, emphasizing that the directive was purely procedural and aimed at welfare support.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and ethical practice, SKIMS urged the public to rely on factual information.

“Responsible discourse is essential to maintaining trust in healthcare institutions. SKIMS will continue strengthening systems that benefit all patients—without fear or favour,” the statement added.
