Unauthorized Macadam Plant Sealed in Gantamulla Following Public Outcry Over Smoke Pollution
Baramulla, November 29, 2025:
In a decisive move to curb environmental degradation and safeguard public health, the district administration of Baramulla has sealed an unauthorized macadam plant operating in Gantamulla, Nowshera. The action comes in the wake of persistent media reports and mounting public concern over the plant’s unchecked emission of thick smoke, which had been plaguing several nearby residential areas.
The plant, situated along the Baramulla-Uri National Highway, had been functioning without proper authorization and was reportedly emitting dense plumes of smoke during its operations. This led to severe air pollution, posing significant health risks to residents of surrounding localities including Nowshera, Peernia, Gantamulla, Pehlipora, and other adjacent hamlets.
Local inhabitants had repeatedly raised alarms about respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health complications, attributing them to the toxic emissions from the plant. Environmental activists and civil society groups also voiced concerns about the long-term ecological impact of the pollution on the region’s fragile environment.
Responding to the growing outcry, the district administration conducted an inspection and found the plant in violation of environmental norms and lacking the requisite clearances. Officials promptly ordered the sealing of the unit and assured the public of strict action against any future violations.
A senior official from the administration stated, “The health and well-being of our citizens is our top priority. We will not tolerate any activity that endangers public health or the environment. Further investigations are underway to identify those responsible for operating the plant illegally.”
Residents have welcomed the move, expressing relief and hope that the crackdown will serve as a deterrent to other unauthorized industrial activities in the region.
This incident underscores the critical role of vigilant media reporting and community activism in holding violators accountable and ensuring environmental justice.
