Baramulla: 10 Jan:
In a joint operation, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Flood Mechanical Department, along with Baramulla Police, seized seven illegal motors from the Chakloo area of Baramulla on Thursday. These motors were allegedly being used by the sand mafia for illegal sand extraction from the River Jhelum bunds.
Officials said the seized motors were being used mechanically to lift sand, which has caused serious damage to the protective bunds of the River Jhelum. Such activities pose a major threat to flood safety and the overall stability of the river embankments.
An officer from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, while speaking to media persons, clarified that these motors are completely illegal and their use is strictly prohibited. He said that traditional boats used for manual sand work are a source of livelihood for local boat owners, but the use of heavy motors not only violates the law but also damages the river bunds.
“Today we have seized seven motors during the drive. We warn people not to use such illegal motors as they can severely damage the Jhelum bunds. If anyone is found using these motors in the future, similar seizure action will be taken without any leniency,” the officer said.
The authorities have reiterated their commitment to protect river infrastructure and curb illegal sand mining activities in the district.
