Jammu and Kashmir inched to the brink of history on Thursday, tightening their grip on the Ranji Trophy final with a dominant all-round performance against Karnataka to move within touching distance of a maiden title at the KSCA Ground in Hubli.
Riding on a massive 291-run first-innings lead and a strong second-innings showing, Jammu and Kashmir stretched their overall advantage to a formidable 477 runs by stumps, leaving Karnataka facing a near-impossible task on the final day. Even a draw would be enough for J&K to secure their first Ranji Trophy crown on the basis of their overwhelming first-innings advantage.
The team’s historic campaign has sparked celebrations across the region, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah travelling to Hubli to cheer the side in what could be a defining moment in the region’s cricketing history.
In a message posted on X, Abdullah said the team had already made “lakhs of people proud” by reaching their maiden Ranji Trophy final and expressed his eagerness to support the players from the stands as they close in on a famous victory.
On the field, Jammu and Kashmir maintained complete control despite an early setback in the second innings that saw them reduced to 11 for 2. Opener Qamran Iqbal led the recovery with a composed 94-run knock, holding the innings together during a crucial phase.
He stitched vital partnerships with Kanhaiya Dogra and Abdul Samad to frustrate the Karnataka attack and push J&K into an unassailable position. Sahil Lotra remained unbeaten at stumps as the lead swelled further, underlining J&K’s dominance in the title clash.
Earlier, J&K’s bowling unit laid the foundation for the commanding position with a disciplined and incisive effort, spearheaded by pacer Auqib Nabi, who claimed his seventh five-wicket haul of the season to dismantle Karnataka’s batting lineup.
Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal produced a determined 130 off 207 balls, but received little support as wickets fell at regular intervals, allowing Jammu and Kashmir to secure a decisive first-innings advantage.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh congratulated the players for their grit and discipline, while also acknowledging the efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association in promoting a culture of fair and transparent team selection.
With one day remaining, Jammu and Kashmir now stand on the threshold of a landmark achievement that would mark their first Ranji Trophy title, potentially ending a wait of over six decades and sealing one of the most remarkable chapters in the region’s sporting history.
