The Delhi High Court has attached Rohini Court District Judge Rakesh Kumar to the Delhi Judicial Academy following a heated verbal confrontation with a lawyer inside the courtroom, the video of which spread widely on social media.
According to official orders issued by the High Court administration, Judge Rakesh Kumar, who was serving as District Judge-04 in North-West Delhi’s Rohini Courts, has been shifted in a diverted capacity to the Delhi Judicial Academy and relieved from regular judicial responsibilities.
The development came after strong protests from members of the legal fraternity and the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations in Delhi, which accused the judicial officer of inappropriate conduct during proceedings and demanded immediate action.
Reports said the confrontation allegedly erupted after a disagreement over a courtroom request, leading to a sharp exchange between the judge and a lawyer believed to be associated with the Rohini Court Bar Association. The incident was captured on video and later circulated online, triggering widespread reactions among advocates.
Following the controversy, the bar associations announced suspension of judicial work in several district courts and sought transfer of the judge along with an inquiry into the incident.
The Delhi High Court subsequently ordered that District Judge Dheeraj Mittal, who was serving at the Delhi Judicial Academy, would take over the judicial assignment earlier held by Rakesh Kumar.
The High Court’s action is being viewed as an administrative step aimed at maintaining decorum and confidence in court functioning while tensions between members of the Bench and Bar continue to draw attention in legal circles.
