Sub-Inspector Arrested Red-Handed While Accepting Bribe on Behalf of Investigating Officer; PSI Also Taken Into Custody

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday trapped and arrested two police officials in Srinagar after one of them was allegedly caught demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 on behalf of the other.
According to the ACB, the action followed a written complaint alleging that PSI Karanjeet Singh, the investigating officer of FIR No. 65/2026 registered at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, had allegedly sought illegal gratification from the complainant.
The complaint alleged that the bribe was demanded for facilitating the closure of the case as “Not Admitted” between the parties.
During preliminary verification, the ACB found the allegations to have prima facie substance, following which a formal case was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar.
The Bureau registered FIR No. 12/2026 under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and initiated an investigation.
As part of the investigation, the ACB constituted a trap team to catch the accused officials while allegedly accepting the illegal gratification.
During the trap operation, Sub-Inspector Ravi Jee Bhat, posted at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, was allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 15,000 from the complainant.
The ACB said the amount was allegedly being accepted on behalf of PSI Karanjeet Singh, the investigating officer in the case.
The bribe money was recovered from the possession of Ravi Jee Bhat in the presence of independent witnesses. He was subsequently taken into custody by the ACB in accordance with law.
Following the arrest of the Sub-Inspector, the Bureau also arrested PSI Karanjeet Singh, who has been named as the alleged co-conspirator in the case.
The ACB said that further investigation is underway to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged demand and acceptance of the bribe.
