BJP Members Enter Well of House as Tensions Rise Over Reference to Autonomy Resolution

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday witnessed a heated confrontation between members of the ruling National Conference and the opposition BJP after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution referring to earlier Assembly resolutions, including the autonomy resolution passed in 2000.
Soon after the resolution was taken up, BJP legislators entered the Well of the House and raised slogans objecting to the reference to the earlier autonomy resolution.
Members of the National Conference also raised slogans from the treasury benches, resulting in a noisy exchange between the ruling and opposition sides.
During the commotion, slogans including “Kashmir hamara hai” and “Sara Kashmir hamara hai” were raised by members from opposing sides.
Congress MLA Nizamuddin Khan also entered the Well amid the protests as the situation escalated inside the House.
The confrontation followed the tabling of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution, which referred to resolutions adopted by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, including the resolution passed on June 26, 2000, relating to autonomy.
According to the text listed for consideration in the Assembly, the House also referred to a resolution passed on November 6, 2024, and called upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The resolution further proposes that it be forwarded to the Government of India.
The developments triggered another round of disruptions in the ongoing Assembly session, with members raising slogans and protesting inside the Well.
The House has witnessed several instances of heated exchanges and disruptions during the current session, including earlier protests by BJP legislators over various issues.
The proceedings continued amid the uproar as members of the treasury and opposition benches exchanged slogans over the resolution and its references to Jammu and Kashmir’s earlier constitutional and political resolutions. (KNC)
