SRINAGAR, OCTOBER,19 :

Decision comes amid strike by medical interns seeking a hike in stipend

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approved an increase in the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns in Jammu and Kashmir from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000, marking a significant revision in the remuneration of medical and dental interns.

The Health Department has been asked to issue the necessary orders immediately to implement the decision.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of a strike by MBBS and BDS interns over their stipend-related demands. The interns have been seeking an increase in their monthly remuneration, citing the need for fair compensation in view of their demanding clinical duties and responsibilities in hospitals and other healthcare institutions.

The approved hike, which more than doubles the existing stipend, is expected to provide considerable relief to interns and address one of their key concerns.

The immediate issuance of formal orders by the Health Department will be crucial for implementing the revised stipend and determining the next course of action regarding the ongoing protest.

The decision is likely to be welcomed by medical and dental interns across Jammu and Kashmir, although the impact on the strike will depend on the formal implementation of the government’s approval and the response of the protesting interns.
