Handwara, Jul 12 :

A 70-year-old man in Audoora village in Qalamabad Handwara of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district was referred to District Hospital (Handwara) after allegedly being administered with an expired Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), here on Tuesday evening.

Local sources told GNS that one Ghulam Mohammad Malik son of Ghulam Qadir Malik, resident of Audoora Lam, was taken by his family to NTPHC Qalamabad after he complained of an upset stomach. “The doctors there besides other medicines prescribed him ORS, however on consumption of the solution, the condition of the patient deteriorated significantly following which the doctors referred him to District Hospital Handwara”, they said.

Detailing further, the sources said the ORS as labeled on the wrapper has been manufactured in June 2020, with a best before date of 18 months, which means the solution has expired more than six months before.

The family of the patient urged the medical authorities to take the issue into consideration and accordingly initiate action against the people involved in the unfortunate incident.

Meanwhile, when contacted Incharge BMO Langate Dr. Firdous Ahmad told GNS that he has attached an employee with immediate effect and assured that an enquiry will be made into the matter on priority basis. “We will thoroughly look into the matter and will fix the responsibility to initiate exemplary action against the person(s) involved in the happening”, he said.

He reiterated that, ‘exemplary punishment will be given’ to the alleged person. (GNS)
