Says replete instances available where candidates contested while still in jail; Er Rashid an accused, believe he will be free soon

As the dates for Lok Sabha elections approach thick and fast, the regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir have expectedly taken a centre stage with fresh development in the form of candidature of Awam-i-Itehad Party supremo Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, aka Er. Rashid, set to contest the coveted elections from Baramulla segment.
Awam-i-Itehad Party spokesperson Firdous Baba talking to Alfaaz – the Words said that they believe that the (AIP) chief will be released before the Lok Sabha elections. “If he is not released, the constitution of the country allows him to contest the elections even as he merely an accused in a frivolous case and no charges are proven against him,” Baba said adding, “He can contest from jail and there are replete instances available of candidates contesting from the jail.”
The political affairs committee of the party, led by Ishtiyaq Qadri, in conformity with the aspirations of supporters has decided to field Er. Rashid in the upcoming elections.
The candidates for other parliamentary constituencies will be announced in days to follow, Baba said.
