The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered a departmental inquiry into the alleged suicide of a student of Government Degree College (GDC), Doda, and placed a faculty member under suspension pending the outcome of the probe.

In an order issued by SED, a three-member committee of the Higher Education Department has been constituted to investigate the incident involving Ms. Saba Banoo, a student of GDC Doda, who reportedly died by suicide on January 16, 2026.

The inquiry panel includes Dr. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department; Sanjay Kumar Tickoo (JKAS), Deputy Secretary to the Government; and Syed Ishrat Parvez, Under Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department. The committee has been asked to complete the inquiry and submit its report within seven days.

Meanwhile, in a separate order issued by the Higher Education Department, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad, Assistant Professor (Commerce) at Government Degree College, Doda, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. During the suspension period, he has been attached to the office of the Director Colleges, J&K, till further orders.

The action has been taken to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry into the matter.
