Srinagar, Aug 9 :
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the arrival of the first freight train to the Kashmir Valley as a historic step for the region’s economic growth.
In a post on X, as reported by news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC), PM Modi wrote, “Great day for commerce and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir! It will enhance both progress and prosperity.”
The freight service commenced with a train from Punjab arriving at the newly commissioned Anantnag Goods Shed, marking the first such connectivity of the Valley to the national freight network. Officials said this link will significantly cut transportation costs for goods in and out of Kashmir.
Railway authorities noted that the Anantnag Goods Shed will handle bulk consignments of essentials, construction material, and agricultural produce, ensuring faster and more cost-effective supply chains.
The freight connectivity comes after years of rail infrastructure development in the region, with the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project gradually bringing the Valley closer to the rest of India.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the move is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and strengthen the region’s logistical capabilities, benefiting both local producers and consumers.
This milestone follows the recent operationalisation of the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, which has been instrumental in enabling full rail connectivity to the Valley. (KNC)
