Indian govt has announced that VPNs companies in the country will have to keep customer names, validated physical and IP addresses & handover this data to the govt.
Indian govt has also asked VPN companies to keep record of usage patterns and other forms of personally identifiable information of the users.
Indian executives of the VPN companies who don’t comply could potentially face up to a year in prison under the the new directive.
The directive isn’t limited to VPN providers. Data centers and cloud service providers are both listed under the same provision.
The companies will have to keep customer information for minimum 5 year, even after the customer has cancelled their subscription or account.
Under the new directive, VPN companies will have to collect data including the reason each customer is using the service, the dates they use it and their “ownership pattern” & report it to Indian govt
VPN companies will also be legally bound to provide all IP addresses issued to a customer by the VPN, and a list of IP address being used by its customer base generally…..
