Withdraw proposed power Tarif hike plan or face public wrath . Qayoom wani
SRINAGAR , NOVEMBER ,22 /
The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) has expressed deep concern over the proposed 20% hike in electricity tariff in the Union Territory, terming the move unfortunate and unjustified.
In a statement issued today, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Chairman JKCSF, said that the decision comes at a time when people across Jammu and Kashmir are battling severe cold, minus temperatures, and irregular power supply. He noted that despite being abundantly rich in water resources, the region continues to remain among the worst affected in terms of electricity availability, making the proposed hike both insensitive and ill-timed.
Wani stressed that electricity in J&K is not merely a utility but a lifeline during harsh winters, essential for heating, health, and day-to-day survival. He cautioned that any increase in tariff will further burden households, students, small business owners, and the working class already struggling with erratic supply and prolonged outages.
Reaffirming the Forum’s stand, he stated that JKCSF remains committed to raising the voice of the people through democratic and peaceful means. If the authorities fail to reconsider the proposal, the Forum may intensify its public outreach and peaceful protest measures in consultation with stakeholders.
JKCSF has urged the administration to immediately withdraw the proposed tariff hike, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and prioritize strengthening of the transmission and distribution system across Jammu and Kashmir in the interest of public welfare.
