Srinagar, Dec 14:

The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum chairman Ab Qayoom wani has expressed grave concern over alarming reports of unchecked encroachments, illegal earth-cutting, and misuse of forest land in Tangmarg, as highlighted in a recent news report published by Greater Kashmir. The crisis, involving alleged collusion between a land mafia and certain forest officials, has resulted in forest lands being illicitly sold to unsuspecting residents of Kashmir.

JKCSF chairman Qayoom wani condemns these acts, which have not only ravaged the region’s natural beauty but also undermined the rights of local residents. Delegations from Tangmarg have reported severe restrictions imposed on many villages, with families unable to construct even basic structures, such as cow sheds, on their revenue land. This conflict between the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) and the Forest Department has created immense hardships for the locals.

Wani said delegation of locals approached me at my office that existing approach roads used by villagers and property owners are being blocked and denied under dubious pretexts. Meanwhile, illegal activities in the area are being allowed without any restriction, raising serious concerns about fairness and accountability. JKCSF emphasizes that such environmental and administrative mismanagement has far-reaching consequences, posing a humanitarian crisis for the affected families.

The JKCSF demands an immediate and transparent probe into the matter. While the MLA Tangmarg’s assurance of investigating the encroachments is appreciated, the civil society forum urges the authorities to take swift action to expose and penalize those responsible, regardless of their influence or position.

The silence of key officials and stakeholders is a cause of concern for the residents of Tangmarg and the larger Kashmiri community.JKCSF assures the public that it is closely monitoring developments and will leave no stone unturned in holding the guilty accountable. Public expectations demand justice, and JKCSF stands firm in its commitment to preserving the environment and protecting public rights.
