Srinagar, Feb 14:

The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) Friday urged the government to improve cricket infrastructure in the Union Territory while praising the team’s “successful” Ranji Trophy season.

JKCA member Manzoor Wazir and Former Ranji player Parvaiz Ahmad in a press conference, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that the Ranji Trophy season has been successful, though the team narrowly missed semifinals berth. “Our team’s performance has been consistent, and the perception that J&K’s victories are surprises is changing,” they said.

Parvaiz said that while the team has improved over the years, further enhancements in training facilities and playing conditions are necessary.

Recalling J&K’s cricket history, he said that the region has been participating in the Ranji Trophy for over 50 years. He highlighted that the first century in Ranji history for J&K was recorded in 1979. “Now, our players are consistently scoring big runs, and this year, our youngsters have delivered strong performances,” he added.

Addressing concerns about infrastructure, he said that stadium conditions in Jammu and Kashmir has declined over the years. He emphasised the need for modern facilities to support player development.

He also acknowledged the team’s composure during key matches. He cited fast bowler Umar Nazir’s reaction after dismissing Rohit Sharma as an example of professionalism. “When we defeated Mumbai, the team celebrated with restraint. The players maintained their dignity in both victory and defeat,” he noted.

He further pointed out that the team made bold decisions in selection, including benching key players when required. “These decisions indicate a shift in the team’s approach. We are moving in the right direction,” he said—(KNO)
