ISLAMABAD,APRIL ,10 :
The National Assembly on Saturday hold the voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan after Asad Qaiser announced his resignation from the office of the speaker to avoid contempt charges.
PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq, a member of the panel of the chair, is now chairing the NA session overseeing the proceedings of the lower house.
The PTI government was trying to avoid the vote on the no-confidence and the all-important session of the National Assembly summoned to hold voting was adjourned four times.
The house was expected to meet again at 09:30pm after the namaz break but the proceedings could not be started due to intense political activity in the federal capital.
The voting on the motion was expected after 08:00pm but the lengthy speeches by the cabinet members and multiple adjournments delayed the implementation of the Supreme Court order.
The apex court in a landmark judgment on Thursday declared the ruling of NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri unconstitutional and directed that the voting should be held on the motion today according to the agenda issued on April 03.
However, the ruling party has successfully dragged the matter late at night. Earlier, reports had suggested that Speaker Asad Qasier is refusing to hold voting, saying he is ready to face all the consequences but will not go against his party chairman with who he has a decades-long association.
However, now sources are saying that the speaker has agreed to hold the vote on the motion.
During the first break today — which lasted more than two hours — the Opposition held a consultative meeting in the Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif’s chamber to discuss a counter-strategy for the government’s alleged plan to prolong the session so that voting could not take place today.
Speaking on Geo News, senior anchorperson Hamid Mir had shared that the meeting was held at the speaker’s office where the two sides had agreed to hold voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan at 8pm. However, the voting is yet to take place.
However, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb denied reaching any such agreement with the government, and reiterated that the voting on the no-confidence motion must take place today.
She further said that no conditions of the government will be entertained and that no-time frame has been finalised for the voting either.(The news)
