Baramulla, Feb 8: Senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and District President Baramulla, Mohammad Rafique Rather, has been placed under house arrest, sources confirmed on Thursday. A police contingent from Police Station Baramulla has been deployed at his residence, restricting his movement. Rather was scheduled to accompany PDP President Mehbooba Mufti to Bomai Sopore, where the party leadership intended to visit the family of Waseem Majeed Mir, a trucker from Darpora Bomai, who was killed in a firing incident a few days ago in Baramulla. In addition to Rather, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter Iltija Mufti have also been placed under house arrest. Altaf Malik, PDP’s contesting candidate from Rafiabad, has reportedly been conveyed not to visit Darpora Bomai either. The restrictions on PDP leaders come ahead of their planned visit to offer condolences to the bereaved family of Waseem Majeed Mir. However, authorities have not yet provided an official statement regarding the reasons behind these preventive measures. The PDP leadership has strongly condemned the restrictions, terming them as an “undemocratic move” aimed at stifling their outreach efforts.
