Baramulla: The situation in the kashmir valley following the demise of veteran kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani is absolutely under control and people have cooperated with the authorities, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said on Friday.
The J-K police chief also said the decision on relaxing restrictions on communications would be taken at a review meeting soon .
The situation is absolutely under control, not even a single incident occurred in the last two days. People cooperated and governement forces are working with great restraint. I congratulate people…for keeping peace everywhere, Singh told reporters in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
To a question about relaxations in the restrictions on mobile telephony and internet, the DGP said, We will soon take a review (of the situation) and I think we will restore it soon.”
The authorities imposed restrictions on movement and assembly of people and suspended mobile Internet services after Geelani, 91, died at his home in Srinagar on Wednesday night after a prolonged illness.
Geelani was buried at a mosque near his residence in Hyderpora area of Srinagar.
Asked whether the situation in Afghanistan would have an impact in Kashmir, DGP Singh said, There is nothing to worry about, everything is fine.”
Asked about the reports of some youths from the valley joining the Taliban, the police chief said, This is totally wrong and fake news.”
“Such fake news on social media is a malicious propaganda by Pakistan and pro-Pakistan agents. Everything is fine. The youth are playing cricket, volleyball, rugby. Don’t you see those pictures? Every child here wants to secure his future and no one is going that way,” he said.
In Bandipora, police chief Dilbagh Singh Saturday said that police will go tough against militants and their supporters in Kashmir to maintain peace.
He said that police and security forces won’t allow the prevailing situation to deteriorate in the wake of Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to District Police Lines (DPL) Bandipora, the DGP said that due to the Covid situation, meetings with the police officers had slowed down and now that the Covid graph is going down, the interactions have once again picked up.
“Bandipora is on a peaceful track and the situation has improved here,” he said. The DGP said that in the past few weeks many top commanders of various militant outfits were killed in encounters and especially the killing of Lashkar-e-Taiba/TRF chief Abbas Sheikh and his aide Saqib in Srinagar encounter, people have heaved a sigh of relief.
“Abbas and his associates were involved in so many activities. After their killing, people are feeling relieved,” the DGP said, adding that similarly in other districts of Kashmir, the situation is peaceful and people are enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
The DGP said that police will act strictly against militants and militant supporters including OGWs. “It is the OGWs who carry a pistol to do selective killing and throw grenades to target innocent civilians. We are going very tough against them,” he said.
Asked how he sees the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and possible infiltration of Taliban militants into Kashmir, the DGP said that they won’t allow the prevailing situation in Kashmir to deteriorate. “Situation at present in Kashmir is peaceful and it will remain so,” he said.
