Srinagar, Aug 19 :
Senior politician and former Member Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Friday said
J&K chief electoral officer (CEO) Hirdesh Kumar Singh’s statement that an ordinarily residing person, not necessarily a permanent resident, can become a voter in J&K to exercise their right to franchise has created chaos here and with it, the democracy has been destroyed.
He said this while addressing a press conference.
Baig added that recent announcement that non-locals working in the Union territory can vote in the upcoming elections is like rubbing salt on the wounds of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“By keeping the constitution away, the CEO has made the statement about new voters out of his hand,” he said, adding that these measures will neither improve J&K nor improve the country, ” he added.
“First, in 2019, Article 370 was abrogated and now the right of non-local residents to vote here is just adding salt to the wound,” he also said.
About all party meeting which has been called by Farooq Abdullah at his Gupkar residence on Monday, he said that he will attend this meeting if he is invited.
