Kargil, February 21, 2025: The first 14-day Snow Skiing Course for the 2024-25 season, organized by the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) Gulmarg, concluded successfully today at Village Umba in Sankoo, Kargil. This marks a significant milestone in promoting winter sports in the region of Kargil, Ladakh.
The IISM conducts two snow skiing courses every winter in Kargil, Ladakh. The first batch of this season saw full participation, with 40 students from across India, including several from Kargil and Ladakh. The trainees displayed immense enthusiasm and underwent rigorous skiing training under the guidance of highly qualified IISM instructors.
Over the course of 14 days, participants learned essential skiing techniques, including the kick turn, snow plough, snow plough turn, traverse/uphill swing, long parallel turn, short parallel turn, downhill swing, and basic swing. The trainees showcased their newly acquired skills, reflecting their dedication and progress throughout the program. Col I S Thapa, SM, VSM, MID, Principal of IISM, graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest. He distributed awards to the top performers and certificates to all successful participants. In his address, Col Thapa applauded the trainees for their efforts and commended the instructors and administrative staff for their hard work in ensuring the success of the course.
The IISM aims to nurture skiing talent in Kargil and Ladakh, empowering athletes to excel in winter sports. The successful conclusion of this course sets the stage for more such training programs in the future, further strengthening the region’s potential as a hub for winter sports. This initiative not only promotes skiing as a sport but also opens up new opportunities for the youth of Kargil and Ladakh to explore and excel in the field of winter sports.
