POK ,June 12:
At least 16 people were reportedly killed and 37 others injured after security forces opened fire on protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), according to reports circulating on social media and various news platforms.
The incident allegedly occurred during large-scale demonstrations in which thousands of people had gathered to demand affordable essential commodities, including flour and rice, uninterrupted electricity supply, and greater protection of basic civil rights. Protesters claimed that the rising cost of living and prolonged economic hardships had pushed residents to the streets.
Eyewitness accounts cited in reports stated that security personnel used force to disperse the crowds after tensions escalated during the protests. The firing reportedly resulted in multiple casualties, triggering widespread anger among local residents.
Following the incident, demonstrations intensified in several areas, with protesters accusing the authorities of responding with force rather than addressing public grievances. Calls for an independent investigation into the alleged use of excessive force have also emerged from various quarters.(API News)
