Kerala, Feb 17 :

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday called for national unity to ensure peace and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, saying the country must stand together to address the challenges faced by the region.

Abdullah was addressing the valedictory session of “Vision-2031,” an international seminar on development and democracy organised by the Kerala State Planning Commission in Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was present on the occasion and later greeted Abdullah warmly after his address.

In an emotional speech as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, Abdullah spoke about the hardships faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that many continue to suffer and feel alienated. He expressed concern over what he described as growing communal polarization in parts of the country, while appreciating the southern states for maintaining social harmony.

At 90 years of age, Abdullah said he had undertaken the journey to appeal to the nation to “think of us and pray for us” so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can overcome their present difficulties. He said the strength and unity of other regions give hope to the people of the Union Territory.

Referring to Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, which largely depends on horticulture and tourism, Abdullah voiced apprehension over the reported trade agreement between India and the United States, stating that there was lack of clarity on how it would impact local producers of apples, walnuts and almonds.

He also criticised the abrogation of Article 370 and the conversion of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory, asserting that these measures have not ended militancy. He questioned whether incidents of violence had ceased since August 2019.

Alleging excessive centralisation of powers, Abdullah said India’s federal structure envisages a balance between the Centre and the states. He claimed that states’ powers were being curtailed, affecting governance and autonomy.

Praising Kerala’s development model, he said he was impressed by how the state has progressed despite financial and administrative constraints, particularly in reducing poverty and maintaining communal harmony.

Abdullah concluded by reiterating that India’s democracy must uphold inclusiveness and equal rights for all citizens, irrespective of religion, region or background. (KNC)
