Opposition Leaders Seek Action on Electoral Irregularities; ‘March for Democracy’ Protest Announced in Delhi
NEW DELHI Oct 12 :
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has declined a request from Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge for a meeting to discuss allegations of “vote chori” and alleged irregularities in the electoral process, sources said on Sunday.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, had reportedly sought an appointment with the CJI between 4 pm and 5 pm on Monday to submit a memorandum outlining their concerns over the electoral system.
According to sources, the CJI declined the request, citing the pendency of similar matters before the Supreme Court.
The Congress leaders’ proposed memorandum reportedly sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and restoration of the paper ballot system.
The demands come amid opposition parties’ concerns over electoral transparency and the functioning of the election process. The allegations of “vote chori” have been raised by opposition leaders, while the issues remain subject to the relevant legal and institutional processes.
Opposition Announces ‘March for Democracy’
Meanwhile, opposition parties have announced a protest march towards the Supreme Court on Monday under the banner “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy.”
According to the announced programme, Congress leaders and supporters are scheduled to assemble at the Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road junction in New Delhi at 1:30 pm before proceeding with the protest.
The demonstration is expected to focus on the opposition’s demands concerning electoral reforms, the revision of electoral rolls and accountability in the election process.
The developments have brought the opposition’s electoral concerns into focus, with the proposed march marking another phase of its campaign for changes in the existing electoral system.
The allegations of electoral irregularities are claims raised by opposition leaders and should not be treated as established findings unless substantiated through the appropriate legal or official process.(KNC)
