New Delhi, May 16 :
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday triggered a controversy after making strong remarks against certain unemployed youth and activists during a hearing in the Supreme Court.
While hearing a petition related to the designation of a lawyer as Senior Advocate, the CJI reportedly said that some unemployed youngsters become “media persons, social media activists and RTI activists” and start “attacking the system.” He also compared such individuals to “cockroaches” and “parasites,” remarks that quickly drew attention on social media and legal circles.
The bench, also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was reportedly displeased with the conduct and social media posts of the petitioner lawyer. During the hearing, the court questioned the lawyer’s suitability for Senior Advocate designation and raised concerns over professional standards in the legal fraternity.
The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the issue of fake law degrees and indicated that a probe by central agencies could be considered to maintain the credibility of the legal profession.
The remarks have sparked widespread reactions online, with several legal experts, activists and social media users criticising the language used by the country’s top judicial office.(KNC)
