New Delhi, May 27:The Delhi High Court has directed all jail superintendents in the national capital to use Aadhaar QR code scanning applications for quicker verification and faster release of prisoners granted bail.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Amit Mahajan passed the direction after taking note of repeated delays in releasing undertrials and convicts, with some prisoners reportedly remaining in jail for more than 50 days even after bail orders were issued.

The High Court observed that the delay in identity verification and processing of release formalities was causing unnecessary hardship to prisoners who had already secured bail from competent courts.

The Bench instructed jail authorities to immediately adopt Aadhaar QR code verification technology to streamline the process and reduce procedural delays. The Court said the digital verification mechanism would help ensure authenticity of documents and speed up prisoner release procedures.

The order was passed while hearing matters related to delayed implementation of bail orders in Delhi prisons. The Court stressed that once bail is granted, authorities must ensure timely compliance without avoidable administrative hurdles.

The move is being seen as part of the judiciary’s broader push towards digitisation and faster transmission of court orders through electronic systems aimed at protecting prisoners’ legal rights.
