The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reconstituted the High Power Vigilance and Monitoring Committee to oversee the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 in the Union Territory.

As per Government Order a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS reads, sanction has been accorded for the reconstitution of the committee under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor. The committee includes the Hon’ble Ministers In-Charge of Finance and Social Welfare Departments, Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly from SC/ST categories, the Chief Secretary, Administrative Secretaries of Home and Social Welfare Departments, and the Director General of Police, J&K. The Director or Deputy Director from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is also part of the panel.

The Administrative Secretary of the Social Welfare Department has been designated as the Convener of the committee.

According to the order, the committee shall meet at least twice annually in January and July to review the implementation of the Act, the rehabilitation of victims, prosecution of cases under the Act, and the roles of various officers/agencies. It will also assess reports submitted by the UT Government on these matters. (JKNS)
