Srinagar, June 1:
Justice Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the elevation of former Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court of India.
The appointment was notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice, through an official notification issued on June 1, 2026. Justice Sanjeev Kumar will discharge the duties of Acting Chief Justice until a regular Chief Justice is appointed to head the High Court.
Born on April 8, 1966, Justice Sanjeev Kumar completed his law degree from the University of Jammu in 1989 and enrolled as an advocate the same year. During his legal career, he primarily practised before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, dealing with civil, constitutional, service, taxation and other important matters.
He also served as Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, representing the government in several significant cases.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar was elevated as a permanent Judge of the High Court on June 6, 2017. Over the years, he has delivered a number of notable judgments on constitutional rights, preventive detention, service matters, land laws and issues related to public administration.
With his appointment as Acting Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Kumar will now lead the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, ensuring the smooth functioning of the judicial institution until the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice.(KNC)
