Uri :The acclaimed Kashmiri play “Naad”, written by noted playwright Muhammad Amin Bhat, received widespread appreciation after it was staged at the Auditorium of Government Degree College (GDC), Uri, by Mehboob Cultural Society (MCS), Baramulla under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (S&F Section).
The performance drew a large audience comprising students, faculty members, theatre enthusiasts and local residents, who lauded the production for its artistic excellence and socially relevant message.
Principal, Government Degree College Uri, Prof. Abdul Majid Chalkoo, who was the chief guest, commended the Ministry of Culture, Mehboob Cultural Society and playwright Muhammad Amin Bhat for bringing meaningful theatre to the border town. He said such cultural initiatives play a crucial role in preserving the Kashmiri language and cultural heritage while encouraging young people to engage with literature, theatre and contemporary social issues.
Written against the backdrop of Kashmiri society, “Naad” explores themes of identity, collective responsibility, social harmony and the importance of dialogue in addressing societal challenges. Through compelling performances and thought-provoking dialogues, the play underscored the need to strengthen cultural values and promote peaceful coexistence.The audience responded with prolonged applause, describing the production as both emotionally engaging and intellectually stimulating.
Students and faculty members appreciated the realistic portrayal of social issues and the play’s message of unity, mutual understanding and introspection.An interactive session held after the performance enabled students to engage with the director and cast members, discussing the significance of theatre as an effective medium for social awareness, education and cultural preservation.As part of the programme, Mehboob Cultural Society presented mementos to individuals who contributed to the successful organisation of the event.
Speaking on the occasion, members of the organising committee reiterated their commitment to promoting Kashmiri theatre and creating platforms for local artists to showcase their talent. They expressed hope that similar cultural programmes would continue to be organised across educational institutions to strengthen appreciation for the region’s rich literary and artistic traditions.

Through every performance, we strive to preserve our language, culture and collective identity while inspiring people to reflect, question and embrace harmony. ‘Naad’ is our humble effort to give voice to the aspirations, struggles and values of our people. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the organisers, who acknowledged the support extended by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the management of Government Degree College Uri, and all those associated with making the programme a success.
