Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, India – February 18, 2025: The North Kashmir Working Journalists Association (NKWJA), an amalgam of various journalist associations in north Kashmir strongly condemns the assault on a senior journalist and Chairman of the Baramulla Working Journalists Association (BWJA) by the Tehsildar of Baramulla during the Deputy Chief Minister’s visit to the Dak Bungalow.

This incident is a blatant attack on press freedom and an affront to the dignity of journalists who work tirelessly to uphold the principles of truth and accountability. The NKWJA views this incident as part of a disturbing trend of intimidation and harassment against journalists in the region. Such actions not only undermine the role of the press in a democratic society but also create an environment of fear and suppression.

We demand the following immediate formal and unconditional apology from the Tehsildar of Baramulla for the physical and verbal assault on our colleague. He added that thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, with appropriate disciplinary action taken against the Tehsildar. The statment further said concrete assurances from the government that journalists will be provided with a safe and respectful environment to carry out their professional duties without fear of retribution. In protest against this unacceptable act, the NKWJA announces a complete boycott of all government functions, events, and press briefings until our demands are met. This decision has been taken unanimously by all member associations of the NKWJA, reflecting our collective resolve to stand against any form of intimidation or violence directed at journalists.

The NKWJA reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of journalists across North Kashmir. We will continue to advocate for a free, fair, and independent press, and we call upon all stakeholders to join us in condemning this attack on press freedom.
