CJI Also Maintains Silence on Reasons for Not Meeting Congress Leaders Over ‘Vote Chori’ Allegations
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 12 :
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant on Monday declined to comment on the recent protests in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the restrictions imposed in connection with the demonstrations, stating that the matter did not fall within his domain.
Responding to questions from reporters, the CJI said, “Ye mera mudda nahin hai” (This is not my matter), indicating that he did not wish to comment on the issue.
Justice Surya Kant was interacting with the media on the sidelines of an event held at Vigyan Bhawan to mark the 33rd anniversary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The CJI also refrained from explaining the reasons behind his decision not to meet Congress leaders who had sought an interaction with him regarding their allegations of “vote chori”.
HEIGHTENED SECURITY ACROSS DELHI
Meanwhile, protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar have been reported at various locations across Delhi over the past several days.
Security arrangements were intensified in the national capital over the weekend, with a substantial deployment of security personnel, the closure of 45 metro stations and heightened checking at the city’s border points.
The security measures were implemented amid the demonstrations and related developments in the capital.
Justice Surya Kant, however, chose not to comment on either the protests or the restrictions, reiterating that the issue was outside his domain.
The developments come amid political debate surrounding the allegations of electoral irregularities raised by Congress leaders, who had sought a meeting with the CJI to discuss their concerns.(KNC)
