State Cancer Institute SKIMS celebrated National Cancer Day today at SKIMS Auditorium. National cancer Awareness day is observed every year to raise awareness, prevention and early detection  of cancer in order to curb it.
State cancer Institute SKIMS organized an event on awareness, prevention and early detection of cancer here today. A day long scientific pogram was organized in which experts deliberated on various topics of importance about different modifiable risk factors ,preventive measures, role of screening and early detection in our community. While giving comprehensive overview of various cancers prevalent in the Kashmir Valley of J&K, the experts stressed for various preventives measures including early screening, life style modifications, healthy dietary habits etc. to curb the disease which is spreading at the alarming rate and is the leading cause of death.
They also emphasized for wider community participation to raise awareness and to encourage prevention and early detection of the disease. All the experts underscored the importance of self-examination, attention to any early signs like detection of a lump or a swelling anywhere in the body, unexplained bleeding or unusual discharge from any site in the body, loss of appetite or loss of weight, difficulty in swallowing or a recent change in bowl habits or change in voice. Early consultation with the medical practitioner experts in the field could prevent, detect, treat and cure the cancers exactly in the same way as we have fought various metabolic disorders.
Director SKIMS /EOSG-Prof Parvaiz.A Kaul while appreciating the service of all oncologists and the supportive staff involved in the combat of cancer at SKIMS. He said all the three components Awareness, Prevention and Detection are critical and stressed the need for changing the lifestyles, early detection and diagnosis of the cancers exactly the same way as we have done for diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery diseases and other such measure illnesses. He also emphasised a need for increasing awareness and preventive strategies to combat against cancer including cessation of smoking, alcohol consumption, chewing of tobacco substances and lifestyle modifications.
Dean Medical Faculty Prof. Bashir A Laway and Principal Medical College SKIMS Bemina Prof. Irfan Robbani also spoke on the occasion. Prof. Bashir A Laway & Prof. Irafn Robbani congratulated the organising committee for conducting the event and reiterated the SCI is rendering the service round the clock despite huge patient load.
Prof Nazir Ahmad Khan Head Radiation Oncology/Nodal Officer State Cancer Institute -SKIMS while inaugurating the programme, presented detailed cancer scenario of Kashmir Province and advocated various strategies to curb the disease. Organising sectary of the event Dr Syed Nisar Ahmad presented vote of thanks and appreciated administration for constant support. Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi –Co Organizing secretary of the event presented awards to the winners of Quiz competition.
On the occasion two panel discussions were also held in which various experts from the SKIMS participated –moreover two quiz competitions were also conducted .
