The Supreme Court of India has directed that First Information Reports (FIRs) be registered immediately in cases involving missing persons, making it clear that such cases should not be delayed on the basis of the age or gender of the missing individual.
The court’s direction underlines the need for prompt police action and timely investigation whenever information regarding a missing person is received.
The Supreme Court has emphasised that authorities must treat complaints concerning missing persons with seriousness and ensure that the process of registration of cases and investigation begins without unnecessary delay.
The direction is aimed at strengthening the mechanism for tracing missing persons and preventing possible offences such as abduction, trafficking and other crimes that may be linked to disappearances.
The court’s observations also reinforce the principle that families reporting a missing person should receive immediate assistance from law-enforcement agencies, rather than being made to wait for a preliminary inquiry before an FIR is registered.
The development assumes significance as delays in registering missing-person cases can adversely affect efforts to trace the individual, collect crucial evidence, examine CCTV footage, track communication records and identify possible suspects.
The authorities have accordingly been reminded of their responsibility to act swiftly and ensure that every missing-person complaint receives prompt attention, proper documentation and effective investigation.
The Supreme Court’s direction is expected to further strengthen the rights of families of missing persons and ensure greater accountability in the handling of such cases.(KNC)
