SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER,30 :
Minister Sakina Itoo informed the J&K Legislative Assembly that the Government is set to introduce the New Media Policy 2026, aimed at bringing online news platforms under a defined regulatory framework.
The proposed policy will provide for the registration and regulation of online news media platforms, while District Administrations will maintain databases of unregistered social media news handles operating in their respective jurisdictions.
Responding to concerns regarding misinformation and unverified content in the digital space, Sakina Itoo highlighted the Government’s efforts to establish greater accountability and responsible functioning of online news platforms.
The proposed framework is expected to work alongside existing legal provisions while respecting the constitutional protection of freedom of speech and expression.
The initiative marks an important step towards creating a more accountable, transparent and responsible digital media ecosystem in Jammu & Kashmir.
