Baramulla, 29 Oct 2024:

Drug addiction, fueled by years of unrest, has been a growing crisis in Kashmir, and the region is grappling with a surge in illegal drug use. A recent parliamentary report on social justice and empowerment estimates that around 1.35 million people in Jammu and Kashmir are drug users. As drug trafficking continues to devastate lives and communities, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their operations against narcotics networks.

In a coordinated series of operations across North Kashmir, police have dismantled three major drug networks, seizing 6 kilograms of heroin and brown sugar valued at Rs. 43 crores. Eight individuals were arrested in Baramulla, Kupwara, and Handwara districts, with charges filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The police registered three First Information Reports (FIRs):

  1. PS Baramulla – FIR No. 243/2024 U/S 8/21, 29 NDPS Act with the seizure of 2.695 kg of heroin and the arrest of Nazim Din Tass, Waqar Ahmad Khawaja, and Manzoor Ahmad.
  2. PS Karnah – FIR No. 58/2024 U/S 8/21, 29 NDPS Act with the seizure of 2.884 kg of heroin and the arrest of Sajad Ahmad Gorsi, Mohd Ismail Gorsi, Majid Ahmad Sheikh, and Nisar Ahmad Badan.
  3. PS Handwara – FIR No. 193/2024 U/S 8/21 NDPS Act with the seizure of 465 gms of brown sugar and the arrest of Javid Ahmad Sofi.

These individuals, from different areas in North Kashmir, are believed to be part of a wider drug network supported by militant activities. Police initiatives against narcotics include stricter law enforcement, community outreach, and collaboration with anti-drug agencies. With focused surveillance and rehabilitation efforts, the Jammu and Kashmir Police remain committed to safeguarding the region and dismantling the illegal drug trade.
