Officer Allegedly Suffers Bite Injury During Protest Scuffle; FIR Registered at PS Kothibagh, Investigation Underway

Srinagar Police has initiated legal proceedings against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti after registering an FIR over her alleged involvement in the assault of a police officer during a protest in Srinagar. Police have summoned her to appear before Police Station Kothibagh on August 7 as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to sources, the protest was led by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti at S.K. Park on the evening of August 4. During the demonstration, a section of protesters allegedly attempted to violate restrictions by blocking Residency Road and marching towards Lal Chowk, prompting police intervention to maintain law and order.
Sources said police personnel, including adequate male and female contingents, were deployed at the venue and repeatedly appealed to the demonstrators to remain peaceful and comply with lawful directions. However, despite repeated warnings, some protesters allegedly attempted to breach police barricades and obstruct security personnel from performing their official duties.
During the ensuing scuffle, police have alleged that Iltija Mufti physically assaulted a police officer while he was discharging his official duties. She is also accused of grabbing the officer and biting his forearm, resulting in a bleeding injury.
The injured police officer was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors provided medical treatment, including wound management, tetanus prophylaxis, vaccination and other protocol-based preventive care.
Taking serious note of the alleged assault on a public servant and obstruction of lawful police action, Srinagar Police registered FIR No. 63/2026 at Police Station Kothibagh under relevant provisions of law and launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
As part of the investigation, police have issued a notice summoning Iltija Mufti to appear before the Investigating Officer at Police Station Kothibagh on August 7 to join the investigation in accordance with law.
Sources said investigators are examining all aspects of the incident, including eyewitness accounts and other available evidence, as part of the probe.
Srinagar Police reiterated that the investigation is in progress and maintained that strict legal action will be taken against all those found involved in the alleged assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants while performing their lawful duties. (KNC)
